Meyer Companies Helps Local Community After Storms

The Ruskin / South K.C. area was hit hard, with many trees and power lines down, due to a recent storm that swept through K.C. An elderly friend of one of our employees called her crying as she was so hot and did not know what to do since their power had been off for 3 days.

With all of the medical issues her husband had, trying to move out of the house was not an option. The husband is on Hospice because of bone Cancer and the wife has her own set of health issues including diabetes. She is determined to take care of her husband in their home, even though it is a huge burden on her. She says after 64 years of marriage, she can’t quit now! Knowing if their story was shared among the Meyer Companies team, we could find some help for them.

Kasey Graham and Jacob Brown to the rescue! Kasey and Jake met Chris Foresee at the couple’s home, and within an hour, had a Commercial generator hooked up to the home and running. After 31 hours of no power, this couple was back in business. The husband has a special mattress that requires electricity, it was inflated and he had a good nights sleep! The wife was able to cool off, but was sad when the T.V. still would not work, no cable! Their power is back on today with KCPL.

We are so appreciative of the generosity demonstrated by the Meyer Companies and the people who work here!

Dave Meyer, president of Meyer Companies, asked an important question three years ago. “How do you go about funding community needs when you’re bombarded with the requests of so many worthwhile organizations?”

For Meyer Companies, the answer was to establish the Meyer Companies, LLC, Charitable Fund to organize the company’s giving and to encourage employees to leverage their commercial construction skills through volunteer opportunities.

The Meyer Companies, LLC, Charitable Fund has already made quite a difference! Employees have built a fence around Marion Hope Center, poured a concrete pad for playground equipment, and painted and installed new lighting at Ronald McDonald House. And for the first time, a dedicated advisory committee at Meyer Companies sets the annual budget for corporate giving, putting just the right infrastructure around the company’s gifts of time, talent and treasure to the community.

Partnering with Solar Link

Two Lee’s Summit companies — Pave Guard Technologies Inc. and The Meyer Cos. — are creating a third.

The new entity, tentatively named Renewable Solutions Distribution, will employ 25 workers with an average salary of about $40,000 at a 20,000-square-foot distribution center on Hamblen Road in Lee’s Summit.

The distribution center, owned by The Meyer Cos., will expand Pave Guard’s sales of solar technology components, including solar panels, rooftop solar systems and solar tracking products. They are offered by Pave Guard’s subsidiary, Solar Link.

Through a strategic partnership agreement, The Meyer Cos., a commercial construction and real estate management firm, will take over installation of all Solar Link products.

In addition, the two companies will work together on jobs involving tilt-up concrete walls containing radiant heating.

Lexington Plumbing & Heating acquired the industrial building at 1600-1620 Troost Ave. in Kansas City, MO, from Husar Industries for $1.1 million, or about $32 per square foot. The property at 1600-1620 Troost Ave. is one story, measures 34,000 square feet and was constructed in 1970. John Stafford of Heise-Meyer Properties represented the seller. Look at this incredible work Meyer Companies did for Marian Hope Center!!…. We are on our way…the playground is delivered and we are waiting for the company to come install. After that, we have to let the concrete set for a month before the padding can be put on.

We had a great meeting last night with the General Manager and Director of Marketing for theNew Independence Events Center. They have chose Marian Hope Center as an IndependenceNon-Profit group to support! We will be doing some fund raising events in that beautiful new facility – very exciting news for Marian Hope Center!!

Meyer Companies help Marion Hope Center

Heise-Meyer’s Christina Foresee has been a strong advocate for the Marion Hope Center a non-profit organization that works with Autistic, Downs Syndrome, and other special needs children (for more info visit www.marianhopecenter.org ). In response to Chris’s advocacy, The Meyer Companies Community Relations Committee provided funding and Meyer Companies volunteers gave their time and labor to build the privacy fence for this center, providing these children with a safe place to play.

This past week-end, Meyer Complete’s John Cervantes led a large group of UMKC fraternity brothers in staining the fence at Marian Hope Center.

Thanks Christina, John, and everyone who volunteered for their time and efforts in contributing to this worthwhile effort and to building a better community.

Meyer Brothers Welcomes Billy Hammerly

Billy Hammerly, has over 17 years experience in construction. Prior to joining Meyer Companies, Inc., Mr. Hammerly served as Vice President of a developer and general contracting firm.

Mr. Hammerly also served as Vice President of Real Estate Development for Pet Resorts, Inc. the parent company for Pete & Macs, LLC. And as National Sales Manager for Butler Construction a division of Butler Manufacturing.

Mr. Hammerly received his Bachelor of Arts degree, with honors, from Rockhurst College.

Thursday, December 6, 2007, the Heart of America Chapter of the Associated Builders & Contractors hosted their annual awards banquet. Meyer Brothers Building Company was awarded the “Excellence in Construction Award” in the $1 million to $5 million Commercial Building category for the Kansas City Wizards Training Facility.

Additionally, Dino Simmermon received ABC’s Certificate of Outstanding Field Leadership as Project Manager, and Site Manager Richard Breck received ABC’s Certificate of Outstanding Field Leadership as Site Manager, for the Kansas City Wizards Training Facility.

The Kansas City Business Journal will include a special section in the December 14 issue featuring the winning projects and promoting merit-shop contractors in general.

Fleming West Building Co. and Fleming Complete – Building the Community.

On Saturday, November 3, 2007 crews put the finishing touches on the Salvation Army Chandler Corps building located near the new 202 Santan Freeway and Arizona Ave. Fleming West Building Company and Fleming Complete, located in Chandler, AZ, teamed up with many other Valley Partnership members to complete this years Community Project.

The project involved creating a safe environment for the kids after school. This included laying an acre of sod to create a multi use field, installing a tether-ball court, rock climbing wall, and much more.

Included in the efforts were a great deal of painting, landscaping, a new fence, remodeling of restrooms, new outdoor sign, etc.

Fleming West Building Company is a general contractor serving the Phoenix, AZ metro. Fleming Complete is a building repair and maintenance contractor serving the same area.

Meyer Companies sponsored a table at the Eastland Community Foundation "Sing for Your Supper" on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Eastland Community Foundation is an organization who supports area non-profit and volunteer Service Organizations.

Todays event was a breakfast to raise awareness of community service organizations and to give-a-way 3 prizes of $5,000, $2,500, and $1,000 to 3 organizations.

The Lee's Summit Symphony won the judges vote to take home the grand prize. Judges awarded the checks based on 3 criteria:

ABC Leadership Council Tours Site

Scott Gordon and Jennifer Wenker of Meyer Brothers Building Company gave the ABC Construction Leadership Council an in-depth tour of Zona Rosa's Building C on October 11, 2007.

Located in Phase II of the Zona Rosa Development, Building C is a three story, 66,000 sf building with multi-tenant retail on the first floor and Class A office space on the upper two floors.

Construction of this building consists of concrete tilt-up wall panels with in-laid thin brick veneer and direct applied EIFS coatings, structural steel framing at the upper floors and roof, a TPO roofing system, aluminum windows and aluminum storefront systems.

Interior fit-up includes the first floor lobby area, core restrooms, mechanical and electrical rooms and two elevators. At the time of the tour, the slab on grade was placed, the tilt-up concrete wall panels were in place, the structural steel columns were erected, and the second floor steel framing was in progress.

Meyer Brothers began Construction began in August 2007 and is scheduled to be complete in Spring 2008. They are a general contractor that serves the Kansas City area and are affiliated with The Meyer Companies.

Meyer Companies Helps High Risk Urban Youth

On Friday, September 28, Meyer Companies was one of several sponsors for the "Higher Impact Premiere Event."

The organization reaches out to the "high risk urban youth" and teaches them job skills, leadership skills, and provides mentoring and accountability. They has been featured by People magazine and has been recognized by the President of the United States.

The night was catered and was held in the American Jazz Museum which shares the foyer with the Negro League Baseball Museum. The premise of the night was a Hollywood style premier night to honor 7 youth who are a part of this ministry and who created their own film which was viewed in the history GEM theater.

The founder of Higher Impact, Tyrone Flowers, is a man with an amazing story. Growing up, his father was shot and killed at the age of 7, and beating the odds of his culture, 2 weeks prior to graduating and attending MU on a scholarship, an argument on a basketball court put this MU-bound ball player in the hospital after being shot 3 times. Now flowers is quarantined to a wheelchair.

His determination is a testimony in itself. He truly lives an example of endurance and attitude. Flowers, has since forgiven the man who shot him, and has a friendship with him.

An amazing example of a man who made the most of his opportunity, transforming his misfortunes into an investment that changes lives.

Another way that Meyer Companies is giving back to the the community.

KC Star 30th Celebration

On Tuesday, September 25th, Meyer Brothers Building Company will release a 12 page profile in the Kansas City Star. It will be inserted into the Tuesday Business section and will feature various projects that have been built over the recent years.

This release is part of a 30 year celebration that will continue through the week as the Meyer Companies celebrate this milestone at the Kansas City Wizards soccer game on Thursday night.

Dave Meyer Speaks to Kansas City DBIA Chapter

At an early breakfast on Wednesday morning September 12, a selection of Kansas City’s architects and engineers who are a part of the Kansas City Chapter of DBIA, gathered to listen to a presentation from Meyer Companies co-owner and ABC’s chairman, Dave Meyer.

Mr. Meyer has held the position of this organization which is made up of over 24,000 construction firms, since January of this year. As ABC’s chairman, Mr. Meyer represents the nations construction firms and promotes things such as open competition and free-enterprise based on merit, regardless of labor affiliation.

Mr. Meyer has found himself traveling across the country with ABC’s message and had the privilege of introducing President George W. Bush to the national ABC community at their national gathering.

Today Mr. Meyer wore two hats. First, as the ABC chairman, and second as an Owner/General Contractor.

Addressing topics of design-build and how his company, The Meyer Companies, has incorporated site-cast tilt-up concrete to their arsenal to enhance quality-control, time-control, and cost-control.

The first of two projects that Mr. Meyer addressed was their current office complex, the Business Exchange, located at 200 NE. Missouri Rd, in Lee’s Summit, MO. Mr. Meyer talked on the different challenges that an owner can face in the design-build process, and how site-cast tilt-up concrete was the solution.

The second highlighted project was the elite Briarcliff Village. This 135,000 square foot edifice is located in North Kansas City, MO. Mr. Meyer presented this project from the General Contractor’s perspective and provided a good case as to how site-cast tilt-up concrete was the best solution to manage the difficulties that this project presented.
